Another year has come and gone;
The sands of time keep trickling away.
Birthday is a time for careful reflection
About my life, and its future direction.
I wonder what's coming, what life has in store;
Will it be just the same? Will there be a new door?
As I blow out the last candle:
Remember that life holds no challenge that I cannot handle.

Ya Al Hakiim...Hulurkan kepadaku bijaksana agar aku mampu terus memacu kalam keinsanan sehingga tiba masanya Engkau menjemputku pergi.

Terima kasih Ya Allah atas segala takdir yang telah Engkau tentukan untukku. Engkaulah Ya Maha Besar...

Terimalah permohonan hambaMu yang sedang bermusafir di bumiMu ini Ya Al Mudzill.
Amin Ya Rabbul Alamin.

"Sometimes i feel incredibly disconnected, uncomfortable in my own skin. Or kind of i don't fit into this world. Like i was born at the wrong time and that i don't belong" - Haley James Scott

Nov 30, 2009

I've heard lots of comments about the Twilight saga, both good & bad.. the reason i actually found the book was coz i was intrigued by the movie's synopsis, a couple of month before it was released. I was out of the country at the time, hence wasn't able to catch it at the local cinema.. I found the book on sale, as a tie-in to the movie & i was hooked.. but i have to say that the movie, both movies, had not given it justice. Oh, for a non-reader, i suppose it was acceptable.. but i think it was missing something.. So re-reading the book after watching the movie, i think i see where is the missing link..

One of the major thing i like about Twilight saga is about how Edward loves Bella.. not in a teenager's first crush/love/etc way, but kinda pure love love kind.. And even though Bella is (very) gaga over Edward, she is basically a pretty normal kid..

These 2 movie, Twilight & New Moon doesnt show how Bella was the one who took care of her mom before she remarried & Bella moved to her dad's... or how she managed the household & cooks for her dad (& she's supposed to be a good cook), re-connected with her father over dinner in their kitchen..

How different the Cullens are from other vampires because they are truly a family, which is rare in a vampire community (in Twilight world of course).. How Edward is a gentleman for wanting better things for Bella - to finish school, attend prom, go to college, wanting to marry her, to not kill her..

These are subtle things, but just shows how they are very family-oriented & for most part, trying very hard to be sensible yet cannot be apart from each other. (obviously not everything in the book makes sense, but then again does it have to be.. ;p )

But what i see being portrayed by the movie, are 2 sort of teenagers, who is affected by the love thing.. how bella is "using" jacob to keep her happy, when the book clearly shows that she truly loved jacob, albeit in a different way than edward.. you dont see how "pure" is edward & bella's love (hello... this is after all fiction.. so of course, it's not thaaat realistic, but still logical enough to be believable) & that's the reason for Bella's overly extreme reaction to Edward leaving her.. and that bella have totally lost her marbles, to be pursuing bike ride with total strangers hanging in front of a bar or jumping off the cliff without telling anyone.. duh, so not bella.. she is after all the chief's daughter & has more sense than that, just to prove a point to a ghostly Edward.. she's never been suicidal, even when she was at her lowest ever..

So yeah, i think the movie has got all the parts correct, and yet totally missing the whole point.. it is so not alright for a teenager to act the way bella did in the movie to get over a first love.. & i'm not even going to talk about how Robert is soo not Edward... yes, Edward is an "ice sculpture" but he's supposed to be very emotional when it comes to Bella & his family.. but Robert? is just an ice sculpture, full stop.. acting-wise, the whole lot of them really does sucks (esp Robsten).. hehe..

Anyway, judge for yourself.. watch the movie.. read the book.. see what the hype is all about.. Of course, there are lots of other better vampire & werewolf books out there.. I really do love Vampire Academy & cant wait for the next book.. Have yet to read Vampire diaries nor watched the series.. hmm, there's others but cant think of more right now..

P/s: i think the werewolf were nicely portrayed in the movie, although i dont quite like how bella found out about it.. i prefer the book version.. it makes more sense..

I tried out this biscotti recipe i found from one of the food blogs that i visited.. it was pretty easy to make, as compared to the price that i see that it is selling for.. but then again, it could just be that Starbucks are selling anything at a steeper price than normal.. hehe.. but i was interested to know for myself, what is so special about these biscotti things..

Firstly, i should have taken more effort to really smoothen the dough before i baked them.. it would have been so much easier to cut, rather than crumbling and breaking halfway through..

Second, i cut short the second baking section by half. The biscotti didnt dry up as much as it should, but then again, i didnt want a rock-hard cookies either.. (plus i sort of burn the "white" part of the biscotti during the first baking *blush*.. so didnt want to end up with totally black biscotti instead of black & white.. )
Still not too sure on this part, whether it would be better with longer baking time.. but since this was my first attempt, will probably try to follow through with the recipe next time..

My verdict: the biscotti is easy enough to make & quite tasty really.. but this type of cookie is probably too dry for my taste.. i prefer the crumbly, soft, buttery type.. but would definitely consider making them again.. plus it's really pretty.. hehe..

p/s: I really should learn how to take better food pictures.. the pictures kept turning out blurry & not as appetizing as it should.. ;p

Musing Mondays (BIG)Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about your bookshelf…

Does your house have a communal bookshelf? If not, is your bookshelf centrally located so everyone has access to it?

I live by myself, so all the bookshelf in my house belongs to me.. muahaha..

Well, i have books all over the place really, and that's not including those at my parents' house. Right now, i have my main bookcase in the living room. So i guess you can call it "centrally located" and accessible to all. Just across that bookshelf, i also have a shelf for my magazines..

I have another 2 layer d-i-y shelf in my tv room, mainly for my tbr pile & i just bought a pretty 3-layer white bookshelf for my bedroom to store my religious books. Which btw, is already 75% full.. heheh...

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about social reading…

How much of your reading do you share with others (outside of blogging?) Do you belong to a book or library club? Do you trade books with friends? Do you tell others what you’re reading?

I do share my readings with family & friends, to those who would still listen of course.. haha.. I'm not in any book or library club, although i am tempted to go look for one. Just never got around to it. May never do.. hehe..

However, some of my current teammates are also quite the reader.. Mainly Iexora, who happens to have a similar taste in books with me.. which is absolutely fabulous for me.. I'd tell them of about my latest reads/buy, goodreads and such, although i couldnt get them to sign on *pout*... so far, i've traded books with Iexora & lend some out to the others.. discussion about some of the authors that we've tried out.. In fact, i think i was probably the guilty party who influenced them to get into the twilight-craze.. oopss.. hehe..

Once i was seeing this guy & he told me that he could not be the gentleman that i was looking for.. guess he was right.. and we parted as friends..

To most people, being a gentleman may be an antiquated idea.. but then i'm not talking about someone who holds the door for you or pull out the chair for you.. i'm talking about someone who would put you first above all. One who respects you. and my elders (and theirs). One who is responsible. One who could be the head of the family. One who would do anything to see you smile.

As a Malay, "orang yang beradap" (err loosely translated as one who knows his manners or the local culture) is quite important. As least to my family. We deal with our elders, our relatives, guests, etc on daily basis. There are time & places for everything. The right way to entertain them. How you mingle/speak with them. The things expected from you. How you treat your parents. What do you do when there are guests.. What you can or cannot do.. etc...

There are rules for everything. It's difficult to remember them all. I know. I try & I still get it wrong... :( and imagine that i'm talking about now. not centuries back, when the rules are way, way more rigid. nor am i talking about being around royalties or high society and whatnots. just your basic day-to-day manners.

My father is a true gentleman. In fact, most men of his generation are. But my generation take these things as unimportant.. remeh... something that is outdated. but how can good manners be outdated? I have to say, i've known some, but most men i meet these days.. hmm... are nice guys, but by no means are they gentleman. Or am i expecting too much?

Erghh... I just got back from my cuz, MizWI's open house.. the only thing about going to such a big open house, i have to wait til most of the guest have left to even chat with the hosts.. haha.. but it did give me time to catch up with my other cuz, MdmIN.

MdmIN, the only daughter of my mum's only sister, is about 6 years younger than me. She used to live with me, along with her 2 older brothers throughout our school years. After i left for the UK, and these was during her rebelious teen years (after her mother passed away), she left us to live with her father. She got married immediately after graduating from school despite our protests. We were of course disappointed as she was a smart student & could have gone quite far in her studies, if she had concentrated on it. Instead, by the age of 19, she's already a mother of 1 (now she has 2 boys) and living under the same roof as her in-laws. Couldnt have been easy..

Anyway, recently we have rekindled our relationship.. well, we have kept in touch, meet up every now & then after she got married of course, but was never that close really. She was concentrating on her husband & young son at the time, as well as juggling classes & work plus housework. Hence, the distance... But nowadays, she's gotten much better hold of handling her 2 boys and i think she's completed her studies to-date & has gotten a better job at an international school. She also just bought a house & moved in last weekend.

Which makes me realized, that the young, restless & rebellious teen that i've known, had finally grown up & became quite a lady. Wasnt an easy journey, but she has really matured & at peace with herself. She said that a lot of it was thanks to her husband, who although himself quite young when they got married, was able to tame & guide her to be who she is today. The husband, is one of the most nicest man i've had the pleasure to know. He is curtious, very pleasant & always willing to help. He'd offer to wash the plates even when he's the guest at our house. Orang kata "beradap" la budak nya.. She has been quite lucky to have found a man such as him in her life.

Oct 14, 2009

I'll be the first to admit that i have absolutely no clue when it comes to relationships & love & whatnots. But surely there is someone out there for me?

These days i spend more time "alone"... i dont meet-up with the girls that often.. i can spend the whole weekend without seeing anyone.. i even go to the movies on my own now (coz i got tired of waiting for a movie-buddy & end up missing the shows, then have to wait til it comes out on dvd *pout*).. shocking huh.. so not good for the soul..

Am i depressed? Not really. I've been down before, and i'm way better now. But it's scary how easy i'm accepting this "single" lifestyle. When i meet Mr Potentials, part of me is just too scared/lazy(?) to do anything.. not exactly helping huh.. hehe..

p/s: i've been trying to get this guy to ask me out & he's still not getting it.. sheesh.. & yes, i've considered asking him out, but at the moment, maybe not.. we'll see.. i mean i like him & all, but i'm not sure either if i want to take it further than just friends.. hehe.. i cant even make up my mind.. *blush*..

Ya Allah, bukan aku tak yakin, tapi kadang kala aku tak cukup sabar. tak cukup tawakal.

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about books on your top book lists…

This past week, Borders re-released it’s 100 Favourite Books of All Times. Do you vote in these kinds of polls when they arise? Do you look through the list, or seek out books featured?

I love to check out such list, to try to include some of the items into my TBR pile... But i dont always keep track of them, therefore i never have them on hand or use them as basis when i go looking for books.. however, i've tried out some "best-sellers" out there & some of it, i just dont get it.. :( well, i guess not everything can cater to everyone's taste. So yes, i do check those books out, but not necessarily seek them specifically.

Vote? i dont think i've come across the polls, although i've seen lots of lists by various sources before.

p/s: Oh no, I've only read 19 out of the 100 listed in the Borders' list.. Hmm.. must keep up with the trend *wink*... hahah.. My Book 20 (Markus Zusak -The Book Thief) is patiently waiting it's turn on my shelf..

9. Smooth Sailing On The Friendship
Have you ever lost a friend because they were crushing on you and turning the relationship into something more serious failed? I agree with our Mind of Man. Friends should fall for you and vice versa. If they’re not, something is rotten in the state of your ability to romance. Seek further self-realization.
"Friends should fall for you" ? For real? I wouldnt know if any of my friends had 'crushes' on me coz they'd never tell me anyway.. so far that i know, only 1 had approached me before.. but then i happen to met The Ex at the same time. I've heard rumours that there were.. but i wished they had came up to me about it. I wouldnt laugh at you (at least i think so.. hehe), but i might be laughing at the idea of it, so dont take it personally..

But seriously, i dont get it why people think that i'm intimidating.. or that they think that i'm already in a relationship when i'm not.. i've got something stamped over my forehead, is it? shessh...

1. You Can Go To A Crowded Bar And Not Meet Someone
Hot stuff, all you gotta do is smile at some guy and he’ll melt like butter. Bonus points if you can actually get a sentence out.
Another suggestion given by the article... hmm.. i've smiled and smiled and smiled at that cute guy next door & he still barely talks to me.. hmmmphh.. doesnt help that he's usually hanging outside the house with his bro & other housemates.. i'm already bad at small talks & approching people.. so approching a group of guys? err..so not happening..

and that's the reason why i'm still single.. :( How now brown cow??

Anne of Green Gables (Aladdin Classics) Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I fell in love with Anne of Green Gables after watching the tv series back when i was still in school. I just loved the setting and of course, the main character Anne. However, i never managed to get hold of the book before, somehow.. Better late than never..

The story revolves around Anne Shirley, a red-haired orphan who was sent to live with Marilla & Matthew Cuthbert. These elderly sibling originally requested for a boy to help them around their farm, so imagine their surprise when Anne arrived. But Anne managed to charm them with her imagination and love of life despite her origins. This first book in the series follows through Anne's various escapades, along with her "bosom buddy" Diana Barry until her return from Queen's.

Anyway, reading this brought back lots of memories (visuals from the tv series) so i can totally "see" some of Anne's hilarious expressions.. my favourite would be of Anne smashing her board over her classmate, Gilbert Blythe's head for calling her "carrot", resulting in long-term rivalry between them. Totally hilarious..

The only setback about watching the tv series first before the book, i tend to skip LM Montgomery's detailed description of the scenery because it was just too long. But i supposed that if i had read the book first, it would have been essential to vividly paint out the storyline.

I saw Ceri from Not in the Pink's review on this movie & just had to see it for myself.. and boy, was it worth it..

The story's tagline is: Boy meets Girl. Boy falls in love. Girl doesn't.

Summary: After it looks as if she's left his life for good this time, Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt from the 3rd Rock from the Sun) reflects back on the just over one year that he knew Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel). Despite being physically average in almost every respect, Summer had always attracted the attention of men, Tom included. For Tom, it was love at first sight when she walked into the greeting card company where he worked, she the new administrative assistant. Soon, Tom knew that Summer was the woman with whom he wanted to spend the rest of his life. Although Summer did not believe in relationships or boyfriends - in her assertion, real life will always ultimately get in the way - Tom and Summer became more than just friends. Through the trials and tribulations of Tom and Summer's so-called relationship, Tom could always count on the advice of his two best friends, McKenzie and Paul. However, it is Tom's adolescent sister, Rachel, who is his voice of reason. After all is said and done, Tom is the one who ultimately has to make the choice to listen or not.

As the movie emphasized, this is NOT a love story, but it is a story about love. I liked how simple and real the movie was. Tom, being a hard romantic, is a character that you can't help but love. Even when he is being soo stupid about things e.g. like when he first asked Summer out.. but in a sweet way of course.. I dont really know Zooey Deschanel, but she was perfect as Summer. Kind of quirky. Even when she tells Tom that she doesn't want anything serious, you just can't hate her..

I would so recommend that you watch this movie.. you wont be dissapointed.. *wink*..

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about books on your wishlist…

Last week we talked about keeping a wishlist. Why not pull out that list and show us some of the books you’ve been eyeing off?

My wishlist is probably miles long, but since i've never keep track of it... i wouldnt know.. plus, i doubt anyone would actually buy me any books.. haha.. since i dont celebrate christmas, christmas gift is out of the question.. birthdays? hmm.. in this digital age, i get more smses & fb wishes rather than actual birthday cards or gifts.. and the gifts i do get, are usually not books.. ;p

But no fear, with all the reviews i see in Goodreads and book blogs that i follow, i just had to start a wishlist over at Goodreads just to keep track of all those interesting reads that are being recommended. If no one else will buy it for me, i'd just have to buy them myself so there.. haha.. But obviously this is by no means a complete list.

But right now, the top of my wishlist is Nicholas Sparks's The Last Song & Richelle Mead's Blood Promise (Vampire Academy #4).

I still cant decide whether i want to read Dan Brown & Audrey Niffenegger's latest books. The former coz i'm wondering whether it is another carbon copy of the Da Vince Code. The latter coz i just love The Time Traveller's Wife & not sure whether this one can exceed the expectation. Either way, i'll most likely to try and get hold of these books, but definitely not planning to buy the hard cover.

Suggested by Monibo:

Saw this article (from March) and thought it would make a good BTT confessional question:

Two-thirds of Brits have lied about reading books they haven’t. Have you? Why? What book?

Me, lie? err.. not that i can recall.. haha... but then, the only reason would be, the fact that i read at all already "impresses" people (though for the life of me, i cant see what's the big deal about it.. hehe.. i still have not reached that 100 books per year target yet..)...
However, i supposed if i'm in a crowd of folks who have read some great literature, i suppose i'd probably end up just keeping quiet rather than speak & make known that i've not read of the book that they are raving about.. hehe..

Oct 1, 2009

I've been so lazy to update my blogs these days.. so many other distractions in the way.. haha..

Eid have been chaotic as usual.. with the frenzy preparation, family gatherings & visiting, eid drama (& i dont mean the ones on the telly).. it was finally a relief to reach back home.. good thing not too many people knew my parents came back with me to KL, or they'd come in droves to "beraya" with us... hehe.. either that or they themselves are not back from their own hometown..

i didnt managed to get much pictures as i planned, mainly coz gossipping with the aunts or stuffing my face with food was much more tempting.. haha.. below are some of those fabulous food made by my mum...

The "Ketupat Palas" - before & after cooking

Chicken Rendang, Chocolate Cake & Fruit Cake

The Raya cookies

Of course, i couldnt resist taking the photos of these cute girls during lunch by our ex-neighbour.. The middle girl (in the bed) was playing host to the other 2, and you can see what an impressive host she makes.. lol...

Out of the Blue Out of the Blue by Belinda Jones
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Surprisingly i really liked the book.. Initially i was interested in another of Belinda Jones' book, Cafe Tropicana, but somehow never managed to pick it up. By chance i came across this book, so thought i'd give her a try and i was not disappointed.

The story revolved around Selena Harper, who works on a cruise ship, going from one port to port and loving it. As her latest 2-month leave came around, she finds herself deserted by her newly-engaged best friend. Surprised to find herself feeling homesick, when she has no home to go to in the first place, she agrees to go along with Alekos, to the beautiful island of Crete. She believes him to be a terrible womanizer and only pursuing her because he could not believe that she would reject him. However, the more time she spends with him, she begins to question whether he is truly the person she thought he was..

My Sister's Keeper My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

i was drawn to the book mainly due to the trailer of the upcoming movie featuring Cameron Diaz. plus i've heard of the book for quite some time but it never got to the top of my tbr list before.

If you still haven't heard of the storyline, it's about how a family with a terminally ill child, genetically engineered another to be the Saviour. However, it came to a point where the child, Anna, no longer willing to be her sister's donor, files a lawsuit against her parents for the rights of her own body.

The book did touch on a few difficult topics and given the situation, a very heart-wrenching storyline. However, the book just didnt grab my attention the way it should.

Anyway, i have to say it was an interesting read. i don't hate it, but at the same time, it won't be part of my all-time favorite either.

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about reading trends… Do you find yourself forming trends in your reading? Is this a conscious act, influenced by either your own interests or current publishing fads?

Hmm.. that's a tough one.. i guess a little of both.. i like the supernatural related books - fairies, magics, vampires, time travelling etc .. so i tend to be more interested in those.. (think Harry Potter, Time Traveller's Wife, Twilight, Nora Robert trilogies).. but it also depends on what i felt like reading at the time.. i'd go from romance to thriller to religous to motivational, with no reason whatsoever..

However, if i find an author that i like, i'd try out his/her other books.. how i came across these authors could be due to current publishing fads like Dan Brown (i finished all 4 of his books in matter of weeks, but by his 3rd book, the plot was getting too obvious.. or maybe it was coz i read them all in 'one' sitting? )... or promotion of a new movie (currently reading My Sister's Keeper, Cirque Du Freak).. or these days i just pile up my TBR via recommendations by Goodread pals or from book bloggers'review..
