I normally do prefer the book version rather than the movie/tv version and i normally have read the book prior to the movie. Some books vs movies goes in a different course than each other, but nevertheless enjoyable either version (for example Harry Potter series). But the one book that i didnt like as much, as compared to the movie was Inkheart. Not sure whether it was because i read the book after watching the movie, but i thought the book was a little long-winded. it was nonetheless, still a pretty good story.. :)There are a lot of books being made into movies, these days (“Anna Karenina“; etc). So, this week’s musing — courtesy of http://abookandashortlatte.wordpress.com — asks…Have you ever read a book after watching the movie/television version only to find that you don’t like the book as much as the adaptation?
i realised that i've answered a similar question to this before.. hehe

What are you currently reading? Would you recommend it to others? Is it part of a series (if so, which one)? What are you thinking about it? What book(s) would you compare it to, if any?

What do you think of books that receive a lot of hype? (think of the “Twilight” saga, or “Harry Potter”, or “The Da Vinci Code”). Do you read them? Why, or why not?
Some of these books are actually pretty good... but so far that i've encountered (& not many at that so i could be a little bias), are well.. not the greatest really.. chances are, i would want to see for myself what makes so & so books "hype"-ful, so yes, i would probably read them & then make up my mind about it..
However, i did read the Twilight saga, Harry Potter & Da Vince Code way before it got huge.. i really liked these books, but not obsessed.. And i have seen how obsessed some people are (for Twillight).. *shake head*...

Oh no.. i havent update my poor blog for soooo long... hehe.. i've got tons to tell, & nothing to write.. haha.. one of the point of having the blog in the first place was to sort that out actually.. guess not quite working, huh... ? ;)

Do you – or are you even able – to do other things while you read? Do you knit, hold a conversation, keep an eye on the TV? Anything?
Ahaks.. i, unfortunately do do other stuffs when i read.. the main one is usually the tv.. my mum used to be so puzzled as to how i can follow thru both the book & the show's storyline at the same timee.. haha.. but then she's the type who can only concentrate on one thing at a time..

Does your house have a communal bookshelf? If not, is your bookshelf centrally located so everyone has access to it?

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about social reading…
How much of your reading do you share with others (outside of blogging?) Do you belong to a book or library club? Do you trade books with friends? Do you tell others what you’re reading?

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about books on your top book lists…
This past week, Borders re-released it’s 100 Favourite Books of All Times. Do you vote in these kinds of polls when they arise? Do you look through the list, or seek out books featured?

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about reading trends… Do you find yourself forming trends in your reading? Is this a conscious act, influenced by either your own interests or current publishing fads?
Hmm.. that's a tough one.. i guess a little of both.. i like the supernatural related books - fairies, magics, vampires, time travelling etc .. so i tend to be more interested in those.. (think Harry Potter, Time Traveller's Wife, Twilight, Nora Robert trilogies).. but it also depends on what i felt like reading at the time.. i'd go from romance to thriller to religous to motivational, with no reason whatsoever..
However, if i find an author that i like, i'd try out his/her other books.. how i came across these authors could be due to current publishing fads like Dan Brown (i finished all 4 of his books in matter of weeks, but by his 3rd book, the plot was getting too obvious.. or maybe it was coz i read them all in 'one' sitting? )... or promotion of a new movie (currently reading My Sister's Keeper, Cirque Du Freak).. or these days i just pile up my TBR via recommendations by Goodread pals or from book bloggers'review..

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about audio books…
What is your preferred method of listening to audio books? Where and when do you listen to them?
I've actually never tried listening to audio books before.. mainly because audio books are not very popular in my country and not as easily accessible. I would love to try, although i can foresee that i might just get easily distracted on other things, rather than concentrating on the book.. haha.. i do that a lot with music as it is.. i liked to have some "noise" in the background, especially when i'm driving etc, but i don't always "listen" to it..
If there are any recommended audio books out there, i would love to hear them..

Do you prefer to read stand-alone books, or books in series? Do you stick with a series the whole way through or stop after the first instalment? Are there any particular series you enjoy?(question courtesy of Elena)
I love both.. to me, stand-alone and series are two different catagories by themselves, so i cant compare the two.. lately though, i've been reading a lot of series rather than stand-alones.. and when it comes to series, once i start on one book, i just have to find the rest.. but this of course, will depends on the availablity of the books, waiting for the next one can be a pain :( .. but a good one..
Some of the series that i've enjoyed (that i can think of, right now):-
- Harry Potter (and re-reading them all the time)
- Twillight saga
- The Chronicles of Narnia
- The Three Sister's Island and other Nora Roberts trilogies
- Vampire Academy (still waiting for the next book)
- House of Night
- The Gatekeeper Series by Anthony Horowitz
- The mediator by Meg Cabot (have not managed to get hold of the series yet, only reading at random now :p )
- Sabriel series by Garth Nix
- Dragonlance Chronicles

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about movies …How do you react to movies made of your favourite books (or even not-so-favourite books)? Do you look forward to seeing them, or avoid them? Do you like to have read the book before seeing the movie?
I do look forward to see the books i've read being made into movies.. However, i sometimes have to remind myself not to judge the movie too harshly for not following the book.. coz sometimes it's just too disappointing to see a good book, especially if one of my favourite turned out less than expected.. but at the same time, i like to see how other people interpret the book & present it in the big screen. whether it matches to my imagination..
I prefer to have read the book before i see the movie, although not always the case..
But sometimes i do get pleasantly surprised with a movie, for example Inkheart. I only read the book after i watched the movie and i have to say that i prefer the movie to the book.. which is a rare one really.. but i think the movie presented the story in a much more fluid way and the actions are much more fast-paced. The book, although pretty good, was a little long-winded at times.. But then, watching an interesting movie such as Inkheart, for one thing, does makes me want to find and read the book for myself..
Some of the books-made-into-movies that i've seen:
- The Notebook - (read first) the movie was also quite good
- Twilight - (read first) Rob is so not like Edward, but he did okay
- The Da Vinci Code - (read first) Tom Hanks so do not fit into the character and the movie, well, not that great
- Harry Potter - (read first) some of the movies was okay but still not up to expectation, especially with Half-blood Prince..
- Memoirs of a Geisha - (read first) the movie was good, but so different than the book.
- Stardust - (read first) i liked the movie even though it was different than the book.
and others that i can't think of right now...
p/s: hmm.. i really should go read My Sister's Keeper before the movie comes out..

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about publishing houses …Do you have a favourite publishing house -- one that puts out books that you constantly find yourself wanting to read? If so, who? And, what books have they published that you've loved? (question courtesy of MizB)
I dont think i have a favourite publishing house, nor do i realise my books are coming from which publishing house in the first place.. hahah..these days i just pretty much pick up any books that i fancy, rather than limit myself to specific groups.
However, having said that, back when i was in school, i did used to read a lot of sweet valley high and other similar books.. there's these second hand book stores, a whole row of them, where i'd go get my school references book.. my mum used to tell the "mamak" who runs the store, to go pick up as many "chicken books" as she called them, for me to choose from.. haha.. I think is was Bantam Books, by Random House, if i remember correctly.. my mum can never remember what books it was i was reading, it all looks the same to her.. so she referred to the whole lot of them as "the chicken books" coz it has this red rooster logo on the books. Plus it's easier to explain to the "mamak" rather than trying to get him to pull out all his sweet valley high series or whatever series it was i was reading back then.. :)
Even so, i'd still say i'd normally go with the books rather than the publishing house.. it just that sometimes, the books that i do pick up, happens to comes from the same publishing house.. hey, that was just a coincidence.. *wink*... that is, if i remember to look at who was the publishing house at all..

MUSING MONDAY is hosted by Rebecca from Just One More Page. Today's musing is about early reading…
Do you remember how you developed a love for reading? Was it from a particular person, or person(s)? Do you remember any books that you read, or were read to you, as a young child?
I dont exactly remember how i developed a love for reading, but my mum used to read to me back when we were in the States. I was about 2 then & my mum stayed home while my dad finishes his Masters. She'd read all the fairytales to me - Cinderella, Snow White etc.. & i'd start it off for her with the phrase "Once upon a time" even though i cant even read then.. (note: i dont remember this period but have been told about it by my parents for the umpteenth time, so most likely to be true..)
The love of reading could also have been passed on to me since before i was born.. haha.. well, my parents, both teachers, were doing lots of extra grading while my mum was pregnant (& throughout my younger years - therefore means no school-holiday-trips for me back then ;p), so i was literally born around books & exam papers.. & with my dad continuing his Masters, also involving lots of required reading. Guess seeing both my parents reading all the time when i was young triggered the interest, although nowadays even my parents are surprised with the amount of reading that i do.. hehe..
Some of the first books that i read was of course, the Peter & Jane books...
This is Peter.
This is Jane.
This is Peter & Jane.
Haha.. dont think i can forget those line.. But at the same time, i dont think i was formally taught to read.. In fact, my mum swears that it was The Sesame Street who taught me how to read.. it could be that my first teachers was my mum & Big Bird.. haha..
